Jann Esterhuizen was born in Durban, South Africa. She was trained by Dudley Von Loggenburg, director of The Music and Ballet School, Durban, and former principal dancer of London Festival Ballet. Esterhuizen has worked for leading South African companies, including South African Ballet Theatre, Cape Town City Ballet, Joburg Ballet and Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company, where she performed in full-length ballets and contemporary works. She has worked alongside leading South African choreographers, Adele Blank and Veronica Paeper, and has had solo works created on her. During her performing career, Esterhuizen began exploring her own choreographic language. She was commissioned to create work for the National Arts Festival in Durban, The South African International Ballet Competition and by Adele Blank for Tuxedo, Cape Town. In March 2017, Esterhuizen relocated to London to develop her artistic practice. Invested in her own professional development, Esterhuizen is a participant on the Kerry Nicholls Dance, Performance Mentoring Programme. Mentored by Nicholls, Esterhuizen is curious to elevate and interrogate a movement-language from South Africa and to respond to the language in the United Kingdom.
