Orla McCarthy and Max Makowski are co-directors of oxmala. They wish to research their new work; PERSON A which deals with the topic of Appearance vs. Reality. Recognising that social demand has changed from following a norm to embodying the most attractive version of oneself possible, they question this urgency to ‘save face’. “The growing number of platforms for us to ‘be ourselves’, ‘express ourselves’, and ‘sell ourselves’ allow us to have multiple versions of ourselves. The question is, which one is real?” Having met during their time studying in Frankfurt, they founded OXMALA to further their creative ideas and develop their choreographic practice.
Orla Mc Carthy is a freelance dancer, teacher and choreographer. Born in Ireland, she began her dance training at Shawbrook School of Dance. She pursued professional training in Frankfurt am Main where she studied a bachelor in contemporary dance in the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst (HfMDK). She is currently touring in the piece ‘Island/Wyspa’, where movement meets voice in the collaboration between: INNE / Iván Pérez and Teatr Pieśń Kozła / Song of the Goat Theatre and in ‘The Melting Pot’, an interdisciplinary exploration of movement and sound with choreographer Gal Feffermann, Director Benjamin Schad and Musical Director Nicolai Bernstein. Most recently, Orla took part in ‘Rinaldo’, her first production with the Frankfurt Oper.
